The Dojo - Learning Discipline and Awareness
Being part of a dojo means being disciplined and alert. This is a place of technique and wisdom. People training in martial arts understand the true power of being disciplined in the dojo. Bowing is the first fundamental step of discipline. This is an act of respect and mindfulness. When in the dojo, students carry themselves as if they were in a place of worship. There is no socializing whatsoever. The only voice heard should be that of the teacher.
The dojo should be full of culture and include a set of written standards that is geared towards excellence only. When training in a dojo, a student is trained to be aware of his or her surroundings at all times. Usually, people walk around as if in a constant state of green light. In other words, they walk around on auto pilot. Training in a dojo teaches them how to be in the state of yellow light or simply aware of their surroundings at all times. It is in the case of danger that they then turn to the state of red light where everything comes to a stop and they are focused completely. This is what makes a true student of martial arts. Now if only people could be disciplined enough to sit down and write in their blog.
